George Hammond was born in Soham in 1884 (registration not found), son of James and Mary Ann HAMMOND (née QUINTON or CURTIS).

1891 census...Aged 8, he was at Hasse Road Cottages, Soham with his father James HAMMOND [36] labourer, born Cowlinge; his mother Mary Ann [36]; sisters Annie [15], Amelia [13], Eliza [10] and Kate [8 months]; brothers James [14] labourer and Herbert [3]. All except his father were born in Soham.

1901 census...Aged 18, farm labourer, he was at Ditch Farm, Burwell with his parents; brothers Jim (farm labourer), Herbert and Bertie [9] born in Soham; sisters Amelia, Eliza, Kate ( now recorded as born in Fordham) and Flora [8] born in Fordham, Norfolk.

1911 census...Aged 25 ? , a farm labourer, he was at Hall Farm, Burwell with his parents (father now farmer), brother James (horse keeper) and sister Flora. Of Mary's 11 children, 3 had died.


Residing at Burwell, he enlisted in Bury St Edmunds on 26th April 1916, giving his age as 31 years 6 months. He was a labourer from Hall Farm, Burwell, height 5 feet 7.25 inches (170.9 cm), chest 37" to 40"(94 to 101.6 cm), weighing 132 lbs (60.1 kg). His father was James HAMMOND.
He was discharged on 21st August 1916 under King's Regulation 392, para (iii)(cc) which is (iii) not being likely to become an efficient soldier ..(cc) recruit with more than 3 months service considered unfit for further military service. Being on the CWGC list, the cause of his death 16 months later has to be assumed to be due to, or aggravated by, military service. Without his death certificate it is impossible to sort that one out. His service precluded the award of any medals.




George Hammond is buried in Burwell (St Mary's) Churchyard near south boundary
He has a private monument.
